The Wumpus
A downloadable game for Windows
THE WUMPUS is based on Hunt the Wumpus, which was a text game Gregory Yob wrote in BASIC waaay back in 1973. Several hide-and-seek computer games of the time were played on a 10-by-10 grid which Yob found boring. He set his game in a cave of 20 rooms, laid out on the corners of a dodecahedron. If you don't know what that is, look it up (these were the original game instructions).
The original game really had no graphics, you just moved from room to room by typing room numbers. The game described to you what was close by: you might smell the Wumpus, hear bats, or feel a draft from a bottomless pit. If you walked into the Wumpus’ room, you either startled it and it would run away or it would eat you.
You had a set of “crooked arrows” that could bend around corners. The idea was to try and figure out where the Wumpus was hiding, and fire an arrow into the node he was hiding in. If you guessed right, you won, if you missed, you might get another chance or the Wumpus might just eat you.
The game's source code was printed in Creative Computing magazine in 1975, all 226 lines of it. It was one of the earliest survival horror games, and a graphical iteration of it was one of the first games I ever played on a hand-me-down Ti-99.
The Wumpus, is an homage to the original game I played way back in the 90's.
This is the first game I've ever published to any kind of public forum, and would be honored if someone even just tried it out, much less provided me with some creative feedback. It's free to play, I made it in Unreal 5.8 with a bunch of assets from Fab, and a horror game framework. TBH, I had no idea what I was doing, but I had a great time making it.
So I guess that's it, play it, let me know what you think, and yeah. It's free of course, I don't plan on ever charging money for the games I make, but I would really love to hear from you if you enjoyed it or not.
